2013 GFWC Convention to be held at the Diplomat

The 2013 GFWC Annual Convention will be June 30 - July 2, 2013 at The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa in Hollywood. This is the first time in many years that this event is being held in South Florida - and it will be many years before it returns. Although the most fun can be had by staying at the hotel, you don't have to if you don't want to. Registration for the entire event is expensive and doesn't include meals, but there are several free events available. For an experience you won't be offered again locally for a long time, try to attend one or two events.

2012 News...

Sibyl Cotten Wins 2012 JetBlue Tickets!

JetBlue Airways is a very civic-minded organization. They are continuing their program to encourage their employees to volunteer and get involved in their communities. In return, after so many accumulated hours of volunteer work JetBlue rewards the employee with ticket vouchers to the organization of their choice. The Ft Lauderdale Woman's Club is fortunate that two of our members - Linda Parlock and Donna Richardson - are JetBlue Flight Attendants. Because of their volunteer hours for FLWC, they earned 2 more JetBlue tickets and again named FLWC as the recipient organization.

At our December meeting, in our continuing effort to raise money for our Restoration Fund, the second raffle for two round-trip tickets on JetBlue Airways and a TravelPro Totebag was held.

Pictured above with Donna Richardson (left) is this year's winner Sibyl Cotten. Thanks to Donna and Linda for once again obtaining the tickets by submitting their volunteer hours.

Lifetime Member Olga Adamo, 99, Dies

Longtime member Olga Adamo died on Monday, August 27, 2012, exactly 2 months shy of her 100th birthday.

Very few current FLWC members would remember Olga. She was a member of FLWC from 1991 until the present and was named a Lifetime Member in 2007. She was a valued active member and served as Rentals Treasurer for many years. As the picture at left shows, she loved hats - and won a prize at the Mad-Hatters meeting in 2003.

Although she hadn't been an active club member in recent years, it wasn't due to failing health; she was in good health until the week preceding her death - even still driving at the age of 99 according to her son Ron. She had been making her home with him, his wife Lisa and their family in Palm Bay, FL.

Her funeral mass was held on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church.

Donna Richardson, Mae Silver Named FLWC Women of the Year

At the February meeting of FLWC, Donna Richardson and Mae Silver were both named Women of the Year for 2010 and 2011. They are pictured with FLWC President JoAnn Smith.

There were two honorees because no one was named the previous year. In fact, it was rather appropriate since both Mae and Donna have contributed significantly to the club during both 2010 and 2011. Donna has chaired the Home Life Department and Mae, the Education Department. Both have participated in almost every club project in one way or another. Mae brought the Goodyear Blimp ride project to the club and Donna, the JetBlue tickets.

Genia Ellis, France Karr Recognized for Service

Also at the February meeting, certificates of appreciation were awarded to Genia Ellis for her outstanding work overseeing the Clubhouse renovation im 2010 and to France Karr for her many years of service as Hospitality Chairman, sometimes even organizing club luncheons from France.

Jo-Ann Anstett Wins JetBlue tickets!

JetBlue Airways not only runs a great airline but, is a very civic minded organization as well. Last year they developed a program to encourage their employees to volunteer and get involved in their communities. In return, after so many accumulated hours of volunteer work JetBlue would reward the employee with ticket vouchers to the organization of their choice. The Ft Lauderdale Woman's Club is fortunate that two of our members - Linda Parlock and Donna Richardson - are JetBlue Flight Attendants. Because of their volunteer hours for FLWC, they earned 2 JetBlue tickets and named FLWC as the recipient organization.

So for our January 2012 meeting, a raffle was held to benefit both the FLWC and The South Florida Wildlife Center with our first pair of tickets.

Pictured above with Donna Richardson (right) is the winner Jo-Ann Anstett, (center) a co-worker of FLWC member DonnaLee Minott (left) who sold the winning ticket!
