Max Oceola Visits FLWC Clubhouse!

by Kathy Mitchell

Wow…what a day we had on June 5!  We were honored to have Seminole Tribe Councilman Max Osceola, Jr. tour our clubhouse with Susan McClellan and participate in our Comcast video for the FLWC restoration/preservation project.  Judy Dixon, the past Building Committee chairman for four years, Lisa Scott-Founds, our newest member and friend of Max Osceola, and I, myself, were present.

Max arrived in his Seminole vest with a big heart.  He received a brief tour from Susan, our talented architect and after introductions and background, Derek began filming.  What an experience!  He was such an eloquent speaker and he shared amazing stories about his experiences with Ivy from our Woman’s Club history.  He spoke about all that Ivy and “her ladies” provided for the Seminole children, and how his people may not have had much, but they were always rich in love and their heritage.  It was wonderful to hear about their past. During the taping, Max shared how the Seminoles may not have had much in the past, but they now are richly blessed.  Then to our surprise, he stated that he and the Seminole Tribe of Florida wanted to give back to the Ft. Lauderdale Woman’s Club and to support the preservation and restoration of our clubhouse with a donation of $25,000

With that, Judy started crying, but the video went on.  The wonderful thing is that you all will be able to view his pledge and his sincerity on the Comcast program.   Mr. Oceola graciously offered to speak at our October membership meeting at our clubhouse.  We were so excited about the opportunity for each of you to experience the wonderful stories and his participation in the Woman’s Club.  He is a kind leader who has never forgotten his humble beginnings and his love for the community.  He also expressed an interest in having some of the Seminole women join our membership.  (I can see Ivy beaming now!)    Thank you all for letting me be a part of such a dynamic group with a wonderful mission.  All that came into my mind was …think of all “the good that we may do” in bringing back this wonderful “little pink house” at Broward and Andrews and to be able to grow in our community outreach.

Governor Crist Stops By!

Charlie's Angels!
Early voting for the Presidential primary began on Monday, January 14 in Broward County. A member of the FLWC Board received a tip that Governor Charlie Crist would be stopping by Stranahan Park - and thus, our Clubhouse - to address the crowd waiting to vote in the Main Library. Ever ready to use any opportunity to advance the FLWC agenda, Susan McClellan rallied Board members to provide cookies and bottled water to those who attended. Also available on the table were brochures and flyers detailing club history, restoration and information on our new literacy project in conjunction with the library. Arriving at 7:30 am in anticipation of a big crowd, she and the group assembled above had to wait until nearly 11 am befor the governor arrived. As it turned out, it was worth the wait! After speaking briefly, he agreed to pose for photos. Pictured above are (l-r) Deb Workman, Club President Alice Sakhnovsky, Judy Dixon, Governor Crist, Susan McClellan, Patricia McDougle and Bev Hoppe.
